School of Rock - Step Off
This clip is from the movie school of rock which features Jack black as a substitute music teacher who was kicked out of his own rock band. I chose this clip because it shows what making music means. It shows that the elements aren't necessary to teaching music, that music can be taught with less technical terms and that anyone can do it. Dewey Finn also tries to engage every student as you can see him going from student to student trying to make the classroom environment as inclusive as possible. This whole process begins because Dewey Finn sees one of his students being reprimanded by his father for playing guitar instead of doing his school work. By the end of this clip he eventually begins to write a rock song with the help of his students. If I was a teacher I would strive to be so inclusive as Dewey was but I might not be so direct to all of the students as I feel that maty make some students feel pressured and nervous in the classroom.
Whiplash
This clip is taken from the movie Whiplash. In this clip Fletcher is going over the piece "the caravan" with his jazz band. during bar 117 he hears a slightly out of tune instrument and begins to investigate. he listens to the section again and then by each row of instruments which then lands him on the trombone section. he starts to scold a trombone and then kicks him out of the jazz ensemble because he is out of tune or rather "he didn't know if he was out of tune or not." Fletcher's behavior is highly unprofessional and crosses into the territory of abuse. His teaching tactics involve humiliation, sarcasm, physical abuse and mental/emotional abuse. Fletcher yells at this man until he starts crying and causes serious trauma to him all because of an out of tune trombone. If I was to teach an ensemble such as this I would not make tuning such a big deal as this during practice as it takes away time from the rest of the students in the ensemble especially because the band was sight reading so there should be a much more lax atmosphere.
